What each status means
- Active
- The license is current and in good standing. This is what you want to see before you engage a CPA.
- Expired or inactive
- The license has lapsed or was placed on inactive status. The CPA cannot practice public accounting on it until it is renewed or reactivated.
- Suspended or revoked
- The board of accountancy has taken disciplinary action. The CPA is not authorized to practice, and the action is on the public record.
Verifying a Washington CPA
- Licensing authority
- CPAs in Washington are licensed by the Washington State Board of Accountancy, a standalone board rather than a division of a larger umbrella agency. Only a holder whose status reads licensed to practice public accounting may sign audit and attest work in the state.
- License number
- A Washington CPA license number issued by the State Board of Accountancy. The public record lists it as a plain number.
- Renewal
- Washington credentials renew on a three-year cycle: every licensee renews between January 1 and April 30, and the required continuing professional education must be finished by December 31 of the year before the credential expires.
- Disciplinary history
- Public. The Board of Accountancy's search shows the credential status, and Board Orders posted on or after January 1, 2020 are available online. A disciplined record reads as suspended or revoked per Board Order.
